English version
Street lights have always entered the design as consumers. The Energy Shift describes Chinese concepts combining a solar module, a vertical-axis turbine, a battery and LEDs on one pole. The 13-second video shows poles installed on an urban street, naming no city and giving no figures.
The wind side carries more uncertainty. The final report of the Warwick Wind Trials, by Encraft, 2009, monitored 26 building-mounted turbines in the UK over 168,950 hours: an average in-use capacity factor of 0.85%, against the 10% to 30% attributed to larger turbines on open sites. At 16 sites measured wind was more than 40% below forecast.
The cost of such a pole is not the equipment, it is the routine. Modules and LEDs barely require visits; a turbine has moving parts and bearings. Across thousands of points, what matters is maintenance per point per year, paid by whoever operates the lighting.
Where wind is measured and confirms, the self-powered pole serves stretches with no grid and avoids feeder works. Without measurement, solar with storage delivers the same service with fewer moving parts.
