English version
Street lighting is one of the oldest uses of electricity in cities. The Energy Shift published a promotional piece by Clodesun on solar street lights, with a five-second video showing the unit by day and lit at night, with no figures on screen. The text cites clean energy, savings and efficient LEDs.
In Brazil, the question of who pays for operation is answered in the Constitution. Article 149-A, added by Constitutional Amendment No. 39 of 19 December 2002, allows municipalities and the Federal District to levy a contribution to fund the street lighting service, which may be charged on the electricity bill.
A solar street light swaps the energy bill for another kind of cost: upkeep of panel, controller and battery, spread across hundreds of points. The promised savings only reach the municipality if the contract defines who performs that maintenance and with what funds.
The technology makes sense where extending the grid is costly or slow, such as rural areas and isolated stretches. The outcome depends on the maintenance plan, set before purchase.
