English version
Britain's system operator, NESO, wants to contain the bill for switching off wind farms by sending more power through existing overhead lines. Sensors monitor cable conditions and calculate in real time how much each can carry. According to Emily Gosden of The Times, dynamic line rating allows on average 8% more power than the fixed limit. She notes it will barely dent the forecast £8bn constraint bill to 2030.
The government's reformed national pricing plan, published on 21 April 2026 and reported by Argus, gives the scale: constraints cost £1.34bn in 2024-25 and could reach about £7bn in 2030-31 without new action. NESO estimates DLR could save up to £400mn in 2030.
The gain comes from assets already built. An existing line delivers more without waiting for permits and works, extending its economic life.
The heavier lever remains expansion: bringing the Norwich-Tilbury and Sea-Link connections forward from 2031 to 2030 could cut a further £4bn that year, by the plan's estimate. Sensors buy time until new lines arrive.
