Perovskite, Canon and Japan's 7th Strategic Energy Plan

Perovskite is advancing through materials. Canon has developed a protective material to improve cell durability, shielding the sensitive layer from degradation by moisture and heat, while Japan invests in the technology to put solar where conventional silicon cannot go.

The reposted material itself acknowledges that long-term durability, large-scale manufacturing and commercial reliability remain challenges. The intended scale is already in an official document: Japan's 7th Strategic Energy Plan, published by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy in February 2025, sets a target of introducing 20 GW of perovskite solar cells by 2040.

A public target of that size creates predictable demand for whoever solves the encapsulation bottleneck, and the company solving it is a materials supplier, not a module maker. For installers, the difference shows up in the contract: on façades and lightweight roofs, replacing a module costs far more than on ground-mounted plants, and guaranteed service life matters more than datasheet efficiency.

The next milestone is the performance warranty manufacturers will start offering for perovskite on vertical surfaces.
