Eneos MCH in Brisbane: 680 kg a day from 2027

Klaus Steven reposts that Eneos, Japan's largest oil refiner, will put US$132 million into a two-year demonstration in Brisbane from fiscal 2026, converting hydrogen into methylcyclohexane for export. The headline says liquid hydrogen, but MCH is a liquid organic carrier, moved at ambient temperature and pressure.

According to CSIRO's HyResource, the plant sits at Bulwer Island, on the former BP refinery site, with a 1.2 MW-class electrolyser and capacity of 680 kg of hydrogen equivalent per day. It has been under construction since 2025, with commissioning in November 2026 and demonstration from January 2027.

The demonstration is funded by NEDO's Green Innovation Fund, and CSIRO records 1.2 MW as the minimum electrolysis unit for commercial deployment of this technology. What goes into testing is that minimum unit, not the chain at export scale.

For Brazil the useful point is the format. A liquid carrier in ordinary chemical tankers, without cryogenics, changes what a port needs to export hydrogen, and that is settled before the first contract.
