Bifacial solar fences in Germany
The Energy Shift presents the solar fences being adopted in Germany: bifacial modules mounted vertically in place of an ordinary boundary, generating power for homes, farms and sheds. The post itself notes that the economics depend on installation cost, orientation, shading and output, and that the fence is not automatically cheaper than a conventional one.
The revenue rules for feeding into the German grid have changed. Since 25 February 2025, under the Solarspitzengesetz, new systems receive no tariff in hours of negative exchange prices, and those without a smart meter may feed in at most 60% of nominal capacity, according to co2online. Unpaid hours are made up after the 20-year period.
This favours generation outside the midday peak. Manufacturer Next2Sun states that its fence yields more with a low sun, especially in the morning and late afternoon, and also in winter.
Any investment case starts with on-site consumption. Power used in the house or shed does not depend on exchange prices. In this design, the fence's value lies mainly in what it avoids buying.
