The green hydrogen value chain waits on investment decisions

Ashraf Abdel Haleem, a green hydrogen and electrolysis specialist working with Japan, maps the chain beyond the electrolyser: renewable power, electrolysis, purification, compression, storage, transport and end use, with forecasting, digital control and automation across every link. His point is that suppliers from other fields already have a place in it.

The IEA Global Hydrogen Review 2026 shows where the chain stalls. Installed electrolyser capacity more than doubled in 2025 to over 4 GW, but new final investment decisions fell below 0.8 million tonnes a year. More than 100 GW announced may miss 2030 without a decision by end 2027.

Every link waits on the project's first cheque. Compression, purification or software suppliers invoice once the plant reaches a final investment decision. Before that, the market is proposals.

The opportunity is real and arrives at the pace projects close financing. On the IEA's numbers, the 2030 window is decided by 2027.
