In the third quarter of 2025, electric cars were 70.2% of new passenger cars in Denmark. A year later, 85.4%. In September 2026 they were 17,785 of 20,026 registrations, 88.8%, a record according to Mobility Denmark. Eugen Filippenko-Siebert shares the figure and cites 98% among private buyers.

Mobility Denmark's release of 1 October 2026 flags the deadline that may bend the curve: under current rules, on 1 January 2027 the threshold above which EVs pay registration tax drops from about 419,000 to about 366,000 kroner. Several popular models would cost tens of thousands of kroner more.

The record share was built on low tax. Carmakers and importers need to price 2027 under two scenarios before year end, while an expert group reviews future car taxation.

Denmark shows the curve rising fast when price helps. January's figure will show how much it depends on that.
