English version
The tanker Kikou Maru, around 105 metres long, completed a hydrogen-fuelled demonstration voyage in Osaka Bay.
A report in The Maritime Executive dated 1 October 2026 sets out the detail: the voyage took place on 25 September 2026, lasted about two hours and covered roughly 20 miles, with an estimated 1.2 tonnes of CO2 avoided against fossil fuel. Built by Fukuoka Shipbuilding and delivered in October 2025, the vessel uses a containerised hydrogen engine on deck driving two electric propulsion engines on two shafts, with a lithium-ion battery. The project is funded by The Nippon Foundation.
The point is the arrangement as much as the fuel. A foundation paid for the first ship, not a shipowner. In a new-fuel demonstration the upfront investment does not close on freight revenue: it buys information on operation, bunkering and maintenance, which is what a bank needs before financing the second.
With the power module in a container, the next step is repeating the operation on a regular commercial route and measuring availability and consumption. That data is what turns a two-hour voyage into a bankable project.
