India's hydrogen train
Station rooftops used to be idle space; in India they have become generating assets. The caption on the reposted video reports a 1,376 kWp plant at Gandhi Nagar station in Jaipur, with estimated annual output of 2.5 million units and savings close to 1.5 crore rupees a year.
The official scale comes from the Ministry of Railways. In a Lok Sabha reply released by the Press Information Bureau on 2 April 2025, the ministry reported 209 MW of solar installed at 2,249 stations and service buildings up to February 2025, with 1,489 installations between 2020-21 and February 2025 against 628 from 2014-15 to 2019-20.
What makes the case replicable is not the roof, it is the buyer. The railway consumes its own output, with predictable load and a single contracting party, which removes the search for a counterparty and shortens the power contract negotiation.
The useful reading for Brazil is an asset one: an infrastructure operator with many load points and its own roofs has the counterparty profile distributed solar looks for, and the result lands on the balance sheet as lower expense rather than revenue still to be contracted.
