NoviOcean combines waves, wind and sun on one platform
Offshore platforms usually dedicate float, mooring and cable to a single source. The reposted video shows the prototype of Swedish NoviOcean, which combines waves, wind and sun on one floating structure and shares the grid connection.
According to Baltic Wind, on 15 May 2026, the Medi Wave 850H model is rated at 850 kW, the NO3 prototype is in sea trials near Stockholm, and 3 and 5 MW versions are planned. In the video, the team says the prototype is one fifth of the intended size.
Operating at sea sets the economics. A study by Giorgi and co-authors in the International Marine Energy Journal, 19 December 2022, on a 100 MW wave farm in Ireland found opex at 53% of total costs in the optimal setup. With one vessel, mean availability was 60%; with two, 85%.
Sharing mooring and cable spreads installation cost. Returns will depend on how many trips to sea each hybrid platform needs over its life.
