A market guide circulating here projects the global hydrogen fuel cell vehicle market rising from USD 0.2 billion in 2024 to USD 2.1 billion in 2030, a 48% compound annual growth rate. That is a consultancy projection, not a recorded result.

California has tracked its retail hydrogen network since 2015. The joint CEC/CARB report on AB 126, CEC-600-2026-022, of May 2026, records 61 publicly available stations for light-duty vehicles as of 2 September 2025 and USD 174 million committed by the Clean Transportation Program to light-duty infrastructure.

The same document reports average network utilisation of around 18% since the fourth quarter of 2015 and 13% in the second quarter of 2025, with 14,128 light-duty vehicles registered in April 2025, the first decline on record. The upfront station investment came from public budget, not from fuel margin.

That marks out where the projection holds: a captive fleet returning to base every day, at ports, in mining and on fixed heavy-duty routes, gives the station a known load and an identified payer for the initial capital.
