Wind blades become bridges in Cork, and Europe expects 25,000 tonnes a year to dispose of

The Waste Innovation Stories page highlights the reuse of retired wind turbine blades as pedestrian and cycling bridges. The text cites projects in Poland and Ireland. The post's image attributes the initiative to New Zealand, and the material reviewed gives no city or timeline.

According to MaREI, at University College Cork, the bridge installed in January 2022 on the greenway between Midleton and Youghal uses two blades from Nordex N29 turbines as its main girders, with a span of about five metres. It was the second of its kind worldwide; the first, in western Poland, was installed in October 2021.

Scale explains the interest. In June 2021, WindEurope estimated around 25,000 tonnes of blades reaching end of life each year in Europe from 2025, a volume that could reach 52,000 tonnes by 2030, and called for a Europe-wide landfill ban.

For wind farm operators, the destination of the blades is part of decommissioning cost. Defined early, it reduces uncertainty at the end of the asset's life. Reuse is one way out. Planning the destination from procurement is the decision.

A escala explica o interesse.

Planejar o destino desde a compra é a decisão.
