Abu Dhabi and the 1.4 million tonne hydrogen target
Low emissions hydrogen advances faster in announcements than in the chain that produces it. According to a report by the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, dated June 2026, the emirate targets 1.4 million tonnes a year of low carbon hydrogen by 2031 and estimates around AED 2.3 billion of production equipment export opportunity by 2029.
The report does not say where the equipment for that scale will come from. In the 2025 edition of the Global Hydrogen Review, published by the International Energy Agency on 12 September 2025, China holds close to 60% of world electrolyser manufacturing capacity and 65% of capacity installed or at final investment decision.
A target set in tonnes and in years depends on electrolyser delivery within a specific window. Concentrating that supply in one origin exposes the schedule to tariffs, export restrictions and manufacturing queues, variables outside the project's control.
The 2031 deadline will be set by the electrolyser manufacturing queue.
