Honda tests 150 kW wireless charging and Sweden shows who pays for the road
In-motion wireless charging depends on the road as much as on the vehicle. Honda is developing with Taisei and Taisei Rotec coils under the asphalt and a receiver under the vehicle, with tests of up to 150 kW and a focus on logistics. According to electrive, the test track is due by the end of 2026 and demonstrations start in Japan's fiscal year 2027.
Sweden shows where such a project is decided. Trafikverket ended the country's first permanent electric road, on the E20 between Hallsberg and Örebro, after cancelling the procurement in August 2023 over rising costs and lack of funding.
The pilot included tolling and access control: someone had to charge for use. A coil embedded in the pavement becomes a road maintenance item, and the split of that cost between road operator, government and fleets needs to be settled before scale.
Hence the logistics focus: fleets on repeated routes concentrate use on the same stretch and make charging predictable. The 2027 test matters for the power measured and for the model of who operates and who pays.
